Weight Management Services for Pets

Expanding waistlines and the health problems that come with them are also affecting our most loyal companions. Unfortunately, approximately 1 in 2 dogs and cats are overweight, with a growing number being obese. This puts them at an increased risk of diabetes, heart problems, arthritis and other complications. On the other side, being underweight is also not good for our furry friends. Getting your pet to a healthy weight is not as simple as giving them less/more food and more/less exercise. To do it in a safe way, it is best to seek the support of our veterinary team. Don’t hesitate to call us at 204.261.7376 to learn more about our weight management services for pets.

How can I tell if my pet is overweight?

During a veterinary exam, your pet’s doctor will be able to know for certain whether or not they are at a healthy weight. Some signs you can watch out for are:

  • A droopy waist/stomach (A pet’s stomach/abdomen area should be tucked in, and not at the same level as their chest when viewed from a side/profile angle. There should be a very visible distinction between their chest and stomach.)
  • You cannot feel all of their ribs because of a thick layer of fat.
  • You see fat pads on their legs that wobble when they walk.
  • They have trouble walking, moving and are easily out of breath.
  • They spend most of their time lying down and inactive.

Is being a bit overweight really that bad for my pet’s health?

Yes. Over time, excess fat puts your pet at risk of developing a wide range of medical issues such as:

  • High blood pressure
  • Cancer
  • Liver problems
  • Skin issues
  • Kidney disease
  • Diabetes
  • Injury
  • Orthopedic issues
