Pet Orthopedic Surgery in Winnipeg

If you have noticed that your pet has been limping lately or is suffering from arthritis, orthopedic surgery may be able to help restore their range of motion and manage their pain. However, pet orthopedic surgery is a major veterinary procedure and our Winnipeg vet is committed to doing everything possible to ensure that your pet has a safe and comfortable experience. Knowing what you can expect and how to make your pet comfortable at home can also make the procedure a smooth experience for everyone in your family.

What Should I Expect Before and After Surgery?

Before your pet’s surgery, our veterinary team will walk you through each step of the process to make sure you understand and are comfortable with each step involved in the procedure. We always complete a comprehensive diagnostic exam before going through with each pet orthopedic surgery, including blood work. We use the findings from the blood work to help confirm whether or not it’s safe to administer anesthesia.

Once we have finished the procedure, we will keep your pet under observation until the immediate effects of the anesthesia wear off. During this time we will also make sure that there were no complications during the procedure. From there, your pet will be released home. Depending on the type of surgery completed, they may or may not be sent home with pain medication. In most cases, we recommend a rehabilitation program that takes 6 weeks or more before full mobility is restored.

Is My Pet a Good Candidate for Orthopedic Surgery?

If you have noticed that your pet has been suffering from pain related to a knee problem, a hip injury or other joint issues, they may be a good candidate for pet orthopedic surgery. However, because this is a complicated surgical procedure, not every pet will benefit from the process. In these cases, our experienced veterinarian may suggest alternative treatment options to help manage their pain and restore limited mobility. As with any major treatment, we will work closely with you to help determine the best course of care for your family pet.
